VIP 5 mg – Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide
VIP (Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide) is a 28-amino-acid peptide hormone belonging to the glucagon-secretin superfamily. First isolated from porcine small intestine in 1970, VIP is now known to be widely distributed throughout the CNS, peripheral nervous system, gut, pancreas, and immune cells. It signals through two G-protein coupled receptors: VPAC1 and VPAC2.
Research Background
Anti-inflammatory activity – VIP is one of the most studied endogenous anti-inflammatory peptides. It inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokine production (TNF-alpha, IL-6, IL-12), promotes anti-inflammatory cytokine release (IL-10), and modulates macrophage and dendritic cell function. It has been investigated in autoimmune and inflammatory disease models.
Neuroprotection – VIP acts as a neurotrophic factor, promoting neuronal survival, differentiation, and synaptic plasticity. VPAC2 receptor activation in the suprachiasmatic nucleus also plays a role in circadian rhythm regulation.
Pulmonary research – VIP is a potent vasodilator and bronchodilator. Research has explored its effects in pulmonary hypertension, COPD, and airway inflammation models, where it may modulate both vascular tone and immune responses.
Gut-brain axis – As a peptide present in both the enteric nervous system and CNS, VIP is relevant to gut-brain axis research, including studies on intestinal motility, mucosal immunity, and neuroimmune crosstalk.
