SS-31 20 mg – Mitochondrial Targeting Peptide
SS-31 (D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2), also known as Elamipretide, Bendavia, or MTP-131, is a cell-permeable, mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide. Its alternating aromatic-cationic motif allows it to cross cell membranes and selectively accumulate in the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM) at concentrations 1,000-5,000x higher than the surrounding cytoplasm.
Research Background
Cardiolipin interaction – SS-31’s primary studied mechanism involves its binding to cardiolipin, a phospholipid unique to the inner mitochondrial membrane. Cardiolipin is essential for electron transport chain (ETC) complex organisation, cristae structure, and ATP synthase function. SS-31’s interaction with cardiolipin is thought to stabilise these processes.
Mitochondrial bioenergetics – Research reports improved mitochondrial ATP production, reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and restored electron transport chain efficiency in aged and damaged mitochondria.
Age-related decline – Mitochondrial dysfunction is a hallmark of ageing. SS-31 is studied in ageing models for its ability to restore age-related declines in mitochondrial function, making it one of the most targeted anti-ageing compounds in current research.
Cardiac and renal research – SS-31 has been investigated in ischaemia-reperfusion injury models (heart and kidney), where mitochondrial damage drives tissue injury during reperfusion.
